![]() Reserving a site is even exciting! It's like shopping on Black Friday. Renting a kayak or canoe and exploring the salt marsh at water level is an adventure not to be missed. There are miles of paved bike paths to explore and a boat/bicycle rental area in case you couldn't bring your own. There are also many other fun things to do at this magnificent park! The three nature trails showcase the dunes, forest and marsh areas and the plants and creatures that inhabit them. ![]() It is peaceful yet invigorating and stimulating! Fellow campers tend to be quiet and respectful, yet friendly and helpful. A short trudge over the dunes with your beach equipment brings you to the most gorgeous, uncrowded stretch of sand and surf you could ever hope to see! You can swim, surf, sun, build sand structures, fish, picnic, watch dolphins frolicking in the waves, collect seashells, and even build a fire right on the beach! The sunrises, sunsets and constant sound of the waves crashing on the beach are unparalleled. There are recently improved pit toilets and outdoor cold shower stalls! The location of the Ocean Side sites completely outweighs the rustic facilities. It is the most wonderful place in the world to camp! The sites are interesting some have sand dunes, some have little swamps, some have wild blackberries, and all of them feature visitors like horses, deer, bunnies and birds! If you are a "glamper", this may not be the place for you, as there is no electricity or hot water. We have been camping at Assateague Island National Seashore for 20 years. If you took the time to read this entire review stop now and get to Assateague as quick as you can. We also spied a turtle, crabs, and the horses were in the distance. We saw plenty of birds, Pintails, Egrets, etc. We rented kayaks one morning and did a self guided two hour tour up the north side from the rental port. We also saw White-tailed deer, does with fawns, and one Sitka buck. You are not going to see a hundred horses as some people expect, but we did see I'd guess 20 or so. There are simple trails that are built up boardwalks in the marsh that get you out enough for some great views. We paid the $20 to access the National Park, which by the way is good for 7 days, and we came back here for the beach several times as well and never got to Ocean City Beach, where you have to pay for parking every time you go. ![]() We came down here to vacation see the horses and visit Ocean City. If you can't have a great time on Assateague Island, stay on the board walk.
